[I'd wondered where this book was! I bought it a while back, but when I went to find it on my TBR shelves it was nowhere in sight. Turns out it was in a box of books I'd set aside to register, and had promptly mislaid!]

I thoroughly enjoyed Butler's very unusual book Severance, so when I learned that he'd done a similar book on the subject of thoughts-while-having-sex instead of thoughts-just-after-being-decapitated, I figured it'd be worth a try!

Later: Interesting mix here; half the fun is spotting the couples involved, before getting to what their thoughts are alleged to be. Cleopatra's here, musing on her past with Caesar even as she lies with Antony; there's a nobleman and a lady from 11th-century Japan, both poets, their thoughts presented in poetic (if not always complimentary) form.

William Shakespeare and Henry, Earl of Southhampton - Will's thoughts are bent on the beauty of the young man, while Henry's envisioning Will leaving him to take up his quill and write. [Henry's musings on the proper shaping of a quill are pretty darned erotic, too.]

Scene: Napoleon Bonaparte, Josephine - and Josephine's pug dog; going for the surprise factor there, I think!

Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde; Lizzie Borden and Nance O'Neil; Milton Berle (Milton BERLE?) and Aimee Semple McPherson... Whether all the couples in the book actually had sex is unknown, but if they were in the same place at the same time, I suppose it's possible!

There are entries for modern couples still living, which struck me as a bit iffy; Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham, for example, from "a rented beach house" in 1971. (George and Laura Bush are here too; equal opportunity?) The thoughts presented for them tend towards political satire, which is funny but still makes me uneasy; I'd rather he'd stuck with characters no longer living. Though to be fair he includes himself with a "Miss X" in a Saigon hotel...

Adam and Eve, Zeus and Hera, Santa Claus and an elf - something for everyone?

I got this book at today's Meetup at the Porter Square Panera. (It was a lovely meetup, with some new faces as well as old friends; thanks to all!) I was amused to find that it's been bouncing around the Meetups for over five years, without anyone making a JE {wry grin}; will find a new release spot!
